Choosing skipping ropes for your school
skip-hop ran skipping workshops in UK schools for a quarter of a century, and these are the ropes we chose for that work: sized for each key stage, quick to hand out and tough enough for daily use in PE lessons and on the playground. Here is how to choose the right ones. For the longer version, read how to choose skipping ropes for school, or the story of the skip-hop rope.
Which rope for which year group
| Who | Rope | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Reception to Year 2 about 1.00 m to 1.30 m tall | 2.1 m speed rope | KS1 skipping ropes, pack of 10 |
| Years 3 to 6 about 1.20 m to 1.55 m tall | 2.5 m speed rope | KS2 skipping ropes, pack of 10 |
| Tall Year 6 pupils, staff, Young Leaders, secondary | 2.8 m rope | Adult skipping ropes, pack of 10 |
| Long rope games for a group | 7.5 m long rope | Long skipping rope |
| Double Dutch and small-group games | Pair of 4.5 m ropes | Double Dutch skipping ropes |
Heights are a guide: a pupil a little shorter or taller can still use the rope for their key stage. The skipping rope size guide has a quick check for any child.
How many ropes do you need?
- For PE lessons: one rope per pupil. A class of 30 needs three packs of 10 in their key stage size.
- For playtimes: the playground skipping set has 20 ropes in the sizes you choose, a pair of Double Dutch ropes, a long rope and a kit bag. Add packs as skipping catches on.
- For the whole school: the primary school skipping rope set has 30 KS1 ropes, 30 KS2 ropes, 10 adult ropes, 2 long ropes, 2 pairs of Double Dutch ropes and a kit bag, plus 6 months of the All-Access Skip Pass free.
- For a club: the skipping club set has 30 ropes in your sizes, a kit bag and a year of the Skip Pass.
Made for schools
- Fast, smooth turning. Low-friction stops spin inside the handles, which helps younger children find their rhythm quickly.
- Tough cord and handles. A scuff-resistant 5 mm cord and grippy, shatterproof handles for daily use on playground surfaces.
- Ready to use. Sized by key stage, so there is nothing to adjust before a lesson.
- Long ropes that don't hurt. The long and Double Dutch ropes turn fast and hold their shape but aren't heavy, so a missed jump doesn't sting.

Give ropes as rewards
Reward ropes are sold only to schools, so a child with one has earned it. Give them for passing a Skipping Awards level or any milestone you choose.
Then get them skipping
Ropes are only the start. Use the skipping skills, the long rope games and the skipping rhymes for free, and the All-Access Skip Pass for the full scheme of work, coaching and videos. Our guide to skipping in schools shows how it all fits together.
Skipping ropes for schools: questions
What size skipping rope does a primary school need?
Size ropes by key stage: 2.1 m ropes for Reception to Year 2 and 2.5 m ropes for Years 3 to 6, with a few 2.8 m ropes for your tallest Year 6 pupils and for staff. Heights are a guide, so a pupil a little shorter or taller can still use the rope for their key stage.
How many skipping ropes does a class need?
For a PE lesson every pupil needs their own rope, so a class of 30 needs three packs of 10 in their key stage size. Add a long rope or a pair of Double Dutch ropes for group games.
Can schools pay by invoice with a purchase order?
Yes. Sign in with a free school account and choose to pay by 30-day invoice with your PO number at the checkout. We post the ropes as soon as the invoice is paid. You can also pay by card.
Do your prices include VAT?
skip-hop is not VAT registered, so there is no VAT to add. The price you see is the price you pay.
How much is delivery and how long does it take?
Class packs, Double Dutch ropes and long ropes go by Royal Mail: Tracked 48 for £3.75 or Tracked 24 for £4.80, whatever the size of the order. Orders with a rope set go by courier for £20. One beaded rope on its own is £3.75 by Tracked 48 or £3.90 by Tracked 24. Orders usually arrive in 3 to 5 working days. We deliver to UK addresses only. Every skipping rope set comes with a voucher for free delivery on your next order.
Why are the school ropes not adjustable?
Ropes that are sized by key stage are ready to use straight out of the bag, with no time lost adjusting 30 ropes at the start of a lesson. A rope that is a little long can have a knot tied under each handle.
