On Saturday the 12th December, skip-hop were invited to work for 3 hours to provide some training with around 90 netball players from the Surrey Netball Academy. skip-hop worked with three groups for around 60 minutes each.

skip-hop focused on footwork skills to begin with then included more complex skills involving upper body based skills which requires greater concentration and demands better coordination. The aim was also to provide some training ideas to bring same added variety and fun to future netball training sessions.

They, like many other sporting academies, recognise the enormous benefit skipping can bring to their performance with skipping helping to develop fine motor skills, speed, strength, endurance and fitness levels.

With this in mind we also demonstrated partner skipping skills which are fun but also demand concentration and teamwork

The squads responded brilliantly to the increased demands put on them so we kept piling on the new skills. After a warm up, each squad went through the basics and on to single bounce footwork based skills.

Various upper body based skips were then covered including Texas 360s, Crisscrosses, Caboose Crosses and Crougars and Double unders for endurance.

We also worked on speed skipping skills, 30 second speed skipping scores were noted for all the skippers which will be entered on the Virtual Skipping League. Top score of 95 came from one of the netball coaches, by the way!!

With each of the groups skip-hop demonstrated double dutch skipping skills or group skipping skills like Figure of Eight both of which are a great way to finish training sessions leaving everyone on a high!

Well done to every one of the girls that took part, it was an absolute pleasure to work with a group with such energy and enthusiasm. Scott Robert-Shaw and Lee Collinson-James - skip-hop

"skip-hop provided a fantastic set of skipping workshops for our netball academy members as part of our intensive academy training day. The girls all thoroughly enjoyed the sessions which provided them with a variety of new training ideas that will be transfered to future coaching sessions. The sessions focused on co-ordination, fine motor control, footwork patterns, upper body strength, concentration, speed, endurance and fitness - all elements that are essential to becoming a top netball performer. We look forward to making these new skipping skills an integral part of our talent development programme and using skip-hop again in the future."  Laura Wilson, Surrey & SW London Netball Development Officer
