Skipping and boxing have been synonymous for generations. You could walk into any boxing gym in the world and hear the whistling sounds of rapidly spinning ropes. Skipping is used to develop endurance, coordination and short bursts of speed and power, further more it helps with improving rhythm, agility and footwork.
Boxers often use skipping to warm up. During skipping, a boxer will use different skipping techniques like crossovers, double unders, sprints on the spot and other moves to maximise the effect and to provide variety.
Many boxing greats used skipping as part of their training, including “Sugar” Ray Robinson. There are many film clips of him skipping to music, his timing and coordination was remarkable.
You do not need an expensive rope to benefit from skipping. Everyone benefits from the conditioning and coordination that will come from regular skipping. If you are new to skipping expect some frustration, practice does make perfect and after all Rome was not built in a day. Persevere with rope skipping, although it might seem awkward at first, once you have mastered the basic techniques of skipping, you will enjoy the massive benefits that skipping will bring.
There are many types of skipping ropes for boxing but skip-hop recommends speed skipping ropes because they turn faster than normal ropes and this will make the skipping faster and much harder therefore improving fitness levels.
To increase the intensity or for more advanced skippers we recommend using the heavier workout skipping rope, this will help to work the forearms as well as building endurance.
