“In POD We Trust” Skipping for exercise is better with music

Listening to music changes how effective your skip-hop skipping workouts will be. But beware, benefits can be affected by the choice of your music tracks!

In most fitness environments there is some sort of music either as a background or the driving force of the exercise. In a yoga class, some very laid back music can calm the participants. In a gym or workout class you can normally find the sound system banging out the latest chart hits.

skip-hop skipping is no different. With iPods and portable music players becoming increasingly smaller and more portable, everyone can use them when exercising. There is growing evidence pointing to the fact that there are considerable benefits to doing so.

According to recent research by Dr Costas Karageorghis, “Listening to the right songs before and during exercise will not simply reduce feelings of tiredness, it will increase performance levels by up to 20 per cent.”
According to the university of Maryland researchers, the wrong choice of workout soundtrack can decrease your performance. Their research suggests that choosing the wrong tunes when working out; can constrict blood vessels by 6%. If you’re listening to your personally chosen tunes which are appropriate for your workout speed and mood, you can increase your overall performance by up to 35%.

Tuning into a good playlist when your skipping also helps motivate you to continue skipping for longer than normal. This is due to the fact that having music pumping while your exercising, acts as a natural motivational tool and your body tends to synchronise to it. Your body wants to move along to the rhythm of the music. If your body’s synchronising to the music your muscles are working in time to the music. Even your heart rate will try to adapt to the tempo so choose music with a tempo of your expected exercise optimum heart rate.

skip-hop skipping provides an amazingly good workout, and can be very strenuous and exertive. Having the right tunes in your ears while you’re skipping makes the whole experience more enjoyable and serves as a boost to your mind and body to help power you through your workout.

Remember choose tracks with a mood and tempo commensurate with your abilities. Do not choose tracks that drive you too hard before you are ready or so slow that you will not develop. Music also has a motivation and inspiration benefit so it is important to the music that will get you started and will keep you going.

Listening to the appropriate music tracks will help you get the most out of your skip-hop skipping and will increase your performance.
